Language is understanding

Learning a new language is a magical experience, you start to have new feelings, you start to express yourself in new ways, it start to crawl into your life bit by bit. We have a saying in my country " to learn a new language is to have a new self, one for each language".

In Artificial Intelligence, there is a field that is focused on language only, why is that? Because they believe that to teach a machine to think you must teach it to understand language.
